By the morning of the third day of the battle, Rommel was back at the front and once again in charge.* He was not a well man, but immediately took a firm grip of the situation. Despite the failure of the British armour, aerial attacks and artillery fire had once again made life a misery for the Panzer Army and losses were mounting. Fifteenth Panzer had just thirty-one tanks left from the 119 with which they began the battle.

Recognizing the strategic importance of Point 29, Rommel immediately launched an attack with what he had in an effort to regain the feature. Stiff resistance from the Aussies and another concerted effort by the RAF and artillery ensured his attack failed. There was now only one option: he had to bring all his forces together. That evening, he decided the time had come to bring the 21st Panzer Division north so that an effective counter-attack could be launched. The German 90th Light and Italian Trieste Divisions were also ordered forward from their reserve positions at Daba. The following night he would launch his counter-attack and regain the land that had been lost during the previous long three days and nights. With the front stabilized once more, perhaps there would be a chance to take stock and get some precious supplies to the front.

But then more bad news reached Rommel’s HQ. The tanker on which he had been so depending had been sunk outside Tobruk, as had another ship carrying further fuel and much-needed ammunition. The Panzer Army now had enough fuel to last just a few more days. Much depended on the success of his counter-attack the following day.
